Approach: EMDR

A structured way to work with a memory that is still loud.

EMDR is a phased protocol for processing distressing memories. It involves bilateral stimulation while holding elements of the memory, and it is far more structured (and far less mysterious) than its reputation suggests.

The Phases

How it is sequenced.

  • History and treatment planning: what we work on and in what order
  • Preparation: resourcing and grounding you can use anywhere
  • Assessment: identifying the image, belief and body sensation
  • Desensitization: processing in short, contained sets
  • Installation: strengthening the belief you would rather hold
  • Body scan and closure: leaving each session steady

You are not required to narrate everything

One reason people choose EMDR is that it does not require telling the story in detail, repeatedly, out loud. You stay in charge of what is described and what is simply held.

Preparation is not a formality. If the resourcing phase takes several sessions, it takes several sessions.

Online EMDR

EMDR can be delivered by secure video across Florida and New York, using on-screen or self-administered bilateral stimulation. Whether that is appropriate depends on your history and on how steady the between-session support is, and it is a decision made together rather than by default.

More on EMDR

What bilateral stimulation is

Bilateral stimulation means attention moving left and right: following a moving point with your eyes, alternating taps, or alternating tones. It is done in short sets while you hold part of a memory in mind, with check-ins between sets.

You can stop a set at any time. A stop signal is agreed before processing begins.

Between sessions

Material processed in EMDR can keep moving after the session ends, so each session closes with steadying techniques and a plan for the days that follow. If something feels too big between sessions, that is information for the next appointment, not a failure.

The free 5 to 10 minute consultation is the place to ask whether this fits what you are dealing with. You do not need to explain everything on that call.

Ask whether EMDR is a sensible fit before booking anything.
