Substance Use & Recovery

Substance use often begins as a way to manage something underneath.

Outpatient counseling for people questioning their relationship with alcohol or another substance, and for people already in recovery who want somewhere to do the underneath work.

Who This Is For

You do not need a label to start.

  • Wondering whether it has quietly become the only way you come down
  • The nightly two that stopped being two
  • Sober and finding that the feelings arrived on schedule
  • Recovery that is holding while the relationships around it are not
  • Using something to manage anxiety, sleep or focus
  • Someone else has raised it and you are not sure they are wrong

What this is, and what it is not

This is outpatient psychotherapy. It is not detox, medical withdrawal management, medication-assisted treatment, or an intensive outpatient program. Withdrawal from alcohol and some other substances can be medically dangerous and needs a physician.

If a higher level of care is the right call, Amber will tell you plainly and help you think through options rather than keeping you in a room that cannot hold it.

How the work goes

We look at function first: what the substance does for you, on which days, and what would need to exist instead. From there the work can draw on DBT skills for distress and impulse, CBT for the decision points, ACT for building a life your values actually recognize, and trauma work when that is what is being managed.

Twelve-step involvement, SMART Recovery, or no program at all. Amber works with whatever framework you are using rather than replacing it.

Start with a free 5 to 10 minute consultation, with no commitment attached.
