Approach: DBT

Skills for the moments that move faster than you do.

Dialectical behavior therapy teaches concrete skills for intense emotion, distress and impulse, and holds two truths at once: you are doing the best you can, and something needs to change.

The Four Areas

What gets taught.

  • Mindfulness: noticing what is happening before responding to it
  • Distress tolerance: getting through a spike without making it worse
  • Emotion regulation: reducing how often the spike happens at all
  • Interpersonal effectiveness: asking, declining and repairing
  • Chain analysis: mapping how a moment actually unfolded
  • Practice between sessions, reviewed together afterward

DBT-informed, stated clearly

Amber offers DBT-informed individual therapy. A full adherent DBT program also includes a weekly skills group, between-session phone coaching and a therapist consultation team. If that comprehensive structure is what your situation calls for, she will tell you and help you look.

Who it suits

People whose emotions arrive at full volume, whose relationships swing, or whose impulses make complete sense in the moment. It is also useful in substance use work, eating disorder work, and for anxiety that has an intensity edge to it.

More on DBT-Informed Work

How a skill gets learned

A skill is introduced in session, tried in a real situation that week, and reviewed afterward, including what got in the way. The review matters as much as the teaching, because most skills fail the first time for practical reasons that can be fixed.

Diary cards or simple tracking may be used if they help, and dropped if they do not.

Wise mind

One idea runs through all four skill areas: the difference between acting from emotion mind, from reasonable mind, and from wise mind, which holds both. Much of the work is learning to find that middle place when feelings are loud.

The free 5 to 10 minute consultation is the place to ask whether this fits what you are dealing with. You do not need to explain everything on that call.

Ask what DBT-informed work would look like for your situation.

Tell us a little about what brings you here and we will find a time to talk.
