Borderline Personality

Feeling emotions this intensely can be exhausting.

One of Amber's core focus areas. DBT-informed individual therapy for people who experience emotion intensely, whether or not a borderline personality diagnosis has ever been part of the conversation.

The Experience

What this often feels like from the inside.

  • Emotions that arrive at full intensity and take a long time to come down
  • Relationships that swing between very close and unbearable
  • A sense of self that changes shape depending on who is in the room
  • Fear of abandonment that produces the thing it fears
  • Impulses that make sense in the moment and not afterward
  • Emptiness that no amount of company fills

DBT-informed, and what that means honestly

Amber provides DBT-informed individual therapy. That is not the same thing as a full adherent DBT program, which also includes a weekly skills group, phone coaching between sessions and a consultation team. If a comprehensive program is what you need, she will say so and help you look for one.

What individual work does offer: the four skill areas (mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness) taught and applied to your actual week.

The stance

Dialectical means holding two things at once: you are doing the best you can with what you have, and things need to change. Neither half gets dropped. Sessions are direct and warm, and Amber is willing to name a pattern rather than talk around it.

Where trauma sits underneath, that work happens too, after there is enough stability to do it safely.
