Approach: IFS

Part of you wants this. Part of you absolutely does not.

Internal Family Systems treats that as normal rather than as a flaw. Instead of picking a side, we get curious about what each part is protecting and what it is afraid would happen if it stopped.

The Idea

How the work is organized.

  • Naming the part rather than merging with it
  • Asking what job it took on, and when
  • Finding out what it believes would happen if it stood down
  • Meeting the part it has been protecting
  • Building a relationship rather than an eviction
  • Noticing the steadier self that can hold all of them

Why it lands for self-criticism

Arguing with an inner critic tends to make it louder. Treating it as a protector with a history usually does not. That shift is why IFS often gets used here alongside self-esteem, perfectionism and eating disorder work.

Pacing with trauma

Where protective parts are guarding trauma, we go slowly and with consent from the system, not around it. Nothing is forced open on a schedule.

More on Parts Work

What a parts conversation sounds like

It often starts with something ordinary: part of me wants to leave the job, and part of me is terrified to. Instead of arguing for one side, we get curious about each: what it is worried about, how long it has been doing this, and what it would need before it could ease off.

The aim is a working relationship with that voice, treated as a protector rather than an enemy, instead of a fight with it.

How it fits with other approaches

IFS-informed work combines well with CBT and DBT skills, and with somatic attention to where a part shows up in the body. You do not need to adopt any vocabulary you are not comfortable with; plain language works fine.

The free 5 to 10 minute consultation is the place to ask whether this fits what you are dealing with. You do not need to explain everything on that call.
