Couples Counseling

What couples counseling here actually involves.

The Relationships & Couples page covers the clinical work. This one answers the logistics: who attends, how sessions run, and what the first month looks like.

Logistics

The practical answers.

  • Both partners attend together; some individual time happens during assessment
  • Sessions run 50–60 minutes, usually weekly at the start
  • In person at either Florida office, or by secure video
  • One partner books, but both are welcome on the free consultation call
  • Administrative questions can be discussed during the consultation
  • 48-hour cancellation applies, as it does to all appointments

The first month

The opening sessions are an assessment: the relationship's history, the recurring cycle, each partner's own background, and what each of you is hoping for. Amber then reflects back what she sees and proposes a focus, so nobody is guessing at the plan.

Sessions are structured enough that neither partner has to fight for airtime. Amber will interrupt an escalating exchange. That is part of the job, not a sign it is going badly.

Common reasons couples come in

Recurring conflict that changes subject but not shape. Distance that has replaced arguing. Rebuilding after a breach of trust. Parenting differences. A transition (a move, a baby, a career change) that shifted the terms without discussion. Also couples who are deciding whether to continue, which is legitimate work.

Where Amber does not work

Couples therapy is not appropriate where there is ongoing intimate partner violence, and Amber will help identify safer, more suitable resources if that is the situation.

Both of you can be on the free 5 to 10 minute consultation.
