Approach: EFT

The fight is about the dishes. It is not about the dishes.

Emotionally focused therapy works with the bond underneath the conflict, the question of whether you can reach each other, which is what most recurring arguments are actually asking.

The Sequence

How EFT moves.

  • Mapping the cycle: who pursues, who withdraws, and what triggers it
  • Separating the cycle from the two people caught in it
  • Reaching the softer feeling under the sharp one
  • Saying the vulnerable version out loud, in the room
  • Practicing a different response to it, together
  • Making the new pattern durable enough to survive a bad week

Who it suits

Couples stuck in one recurring argument that changes topic but never changes shape, and couples where distance has replaced conflict entirely.

It is also used in individual work, where attachment patterns are shaping relationships that are not currently in the room.

Pace and safety

Vulnerability is not demanded on day one. The cycle gets named first, so that neither partner is being asked to open up while still being blamed.

What changes in the room

Couples often arrive talking about the latest argument. EFT slows that down to the moment just before it escalated: what each person felt, what they needed, and what the other person saw instead. Naming that sequence together is often the first time the argument makes sense to both of you.

The work stays with real moments from your week rather than general complaints.

Practical details

Both partners are welcome on the free 5 to 10 minute consultation. Sessions can happen in person at the Coral Gables, Coconut Grove or Manhattan office, or by video when both of you are in Florida or New York. A 48-hour cancellation policy applies.

Couples therapy is not the right setting when there is ongoing violence in the relationship; in that case the practice will help point you toward safer resources.

If the same fight keeps returning, start with a free 5 to 10 minute consultation.
