Approach: Psychodynamic

Why this keeps happening with different people.

Psychodynamic work follows the pattern back to where it was learned (usually somewhere it made complete sense) so that it stops being the default in situations that no longer call for it.

What We Pay Attention To

The material of this work.

  • Recurring dynamics across unrelated relationships
  • The family rules nobody ever said out loud
  • Reactions that are larger than the current event
  • What gets avoided, and how skillfully
  • How you relate to me in the room, as live information
  • Dreams, slips and the things you almost said

Less structured, on purpose

These sessions are more open than a CBT hour. That openness is the method: what surfaces when nothing is scheduled tends to be the thing worth looking at.

It suits people who have done symptom-focused work and found the relief temporary, and people who are less interested in managing a pattern than in understanding it.

How it combines

In practice this rarely runs alone. Amber often pairs it with skills-based work so that insight has somewhere practical to go, particularly with anxiety, depression and self-worth.

More on Psychodynamic Work

What you bring each week

There is no agenda you have to prepare. Whatever is on your mind when you arrive is usually a good place to start, including the thing that seems too small to mention. Patterns tend to show up in exactly those details.

Over time, connections appear between what happens in your week, what happened earlier in your life, and what happens in the session itself.

Pace and practicality

Psychodynamic work is less about homework and more about noticing, but it is not endless talk with no direction. Goals are discussed openly and revisited, so you can tell whether the work is going somewhere that matters to you.

The free 5 to 10 minute consultation is the place to ask whether this fits what you are dealing with. You do not need to explain everything on that call.

If the same thing keeps happening, start with a free 5 to 10 minute consultation.
